Getting Things Ready/Filling

Filling
  1. Put on your acid proof smock and gloves and a facemask (or a pair of safety glasses with full side shields).
  2. Remove the tank cover plate and set aside in a clean, safe place.
  3. Make sure that the drain valve is CLOSED and screw cap is in place
  4. Add 5 gallons of deionized water to the tank and pre-heat to140°F (60°C).
  5. Slowly add the prescribed amount of sodium carbonate pentahydrate to the tank (624 g for 11 gal. tank, 1.25 kg for 22 gal. tank) stirring constantly until the crystals are completely dissolved.

    NOTE: Be VERY careful not to hit the heater or the float switch while stirring.

  6. Replace the tank cover plate and continue filling the tank with deionized water until the solution just contacts the stainless steel ribs on the bottom of the tank cover plate
  7. Reduce the temperature setting on the controller to 115°F (46°C) and allow the system to come up to temperature.
  8. Using the air switch on the control panel, cycle the air agitation a few times stir up the bath and dissolve any reluctant sodium carbonate crystals that might remain.

1 Preheat 5 gallons (or 20 liters) of deionized water to 140°F (60°C).
2 Stir in sodium carbonate monohydrate:
624 g (for 11 gal. tank)
1.25 kg (for 22 gal. tank)
until completely dissolved
3 Finish filling tank with deionized water and allow to come up to 115°F(46°C)

1 Preheat 1 gallon (or 4 liters) of deionized water to 140°F (60°C).
2 Stir in 6.7 oz (or 200 grams) of sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) pellets until completely dissolved.
Sodium hydroxide is extremely caustic and may cause severe burns.
Avoid contact with skin or eyes, HANDLE WITH CARE
3 Decant into a labeled container and store for later use.
The container must be marked as containing Sodium hydroxide, solution and labeled with a DOT Class 8 Corrosive sticker in accordance with OSHA requirements
